Summer Internship/Scholarship at Pima Prickly Park and the Pima County Native Plant Nursery

This internship takes place at the Pima County Native Plant Nursery and Pima Prickly Park, located at 5845 N. Camino de la Tierra, Tucson, AZ 85741. Interns will commit to 20 hours per week for eight weeks during the summer, with a required minimum of six Thursdays (6:30 a.m.–10:30 a.m.) worked. Remaining hours are flexible and can be scheduled within the Native Plant Nursery’s operational hours (Monday–Friday, 6:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m.), with some weekend options available. Interns will work under the supervision of Amy Belk, Native Plant Nursery Manager, alongside project leaders from the Tucson Cactus and Succulent Society and industry professionals.

Students will assist with plant care, nursery maintenance, and ecological restoration efforts, often outdoors in the desert heat and occasionally in remote areas. Tasks may include working with salvaged plants, many of which have spines or thorns, and involve physical labor. All necessary safety training and protective gear will be provided.

Interns receive a $2,400 scholarship paid directly to their college or university and a 1.5-year membership in the Tucson Cactus and Succulent Society. To be eligible, students must be at least 18 years old and enrolled at an accredited college in the fall or spring following the internship.

To apply, submit a one-page personal essay describing your background, goals, and interest in the program to Amy Belk (amy.belk@pima.gov) by May 11, 2025. Confirmation of receipt will be sent within two business days. Applicants are encouraged to reach out with questions or visit the nursery and park before applying. Finalists may be invited for interviews, with selections made the week of May 19–23, 2025. Upon completion of the internship, students will give a 10–15 minute presentation to the Tucson Cactus and Succulent Society board reflecting on their experience.
