Position Title: Volunteer Outreach Intern
Reports to: Administrative Manager 
Hours/Week: 10 hours/week 
Internship Date Range: May 10, 2024 to August 23, 2024   
Location: Some remote work as well as in person at the gardens

About the Resilience Internships and Student Experiences (RISE) Program 

The RISE Program is hosted by the Arizona Institute for Resilience (AIR) and provides undergraduate and graduate students with paid internships related to resilient environments and societies. RISE internships give students experience in workplace settings with an opportunity to grow their interpersonal skills and prepare them for careers after graduation. 

About the Community Gardens of Tucson: 

The Community Gardens of Tucson is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to build community gardens where people can grow food, work, learn together, and nurture well-being in their communities. The organization manages 17 community gardens throughout Tucson and provides horticulture education programs to people of all ages. 

Internship summary: 

The internship position with the Community Gardens of Tucson involves coordinating volunteer days in the garden as well as coordinating volunteers for outreach activities. This internship position is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in community engagement, event planning, volunteer management, and leadership skills. 

Additionally, Community Gardens seeks to improve its volunteer management systems. Volunteers will evaluate existing systems for volunteer engagement and retention and identify new processes to boost efficiency and effectiveness. 

Internship description: 

The Community Gardens Intern will work closely with the Administrative Manager to organize volunteer activities in the community gardens, as well as coordinate volunteers for community engagement events. The intern will be responsible for tracking volunteer hours and maintaining accurate records, as well as developing and implementing strategies to recruit and retain volunteers in the program. 

Shared Responsibilities:

  • Organizing volunteer days in the community garden, including scheduling volunteers, ensuring tools and equipment are available, and leading gardening activities.
  • Identifying and implementing recruitment strategies such as creating flyers, reaching out to local groups, and attending outreach events.
  • Tracking volunteer hours and maintaining accurate records of volunteer activity.
  • Supporting community engagement efforts through various channels such as social media and newsletters.
  • Providing excellent customer service and support to volunteers and ensuring they have a positive experience.

Compensation: 

The intern will be compensated by the University of Arizona. Students will be paid through two stipends at a rate of $18/hour. 

Requirements: 

Applicants must be active students who are enrolled in courses for Fall 2024.
