Introducing AIRES: the new Arizona Institutes for Resilient Environment and Societies
On November 18, 2019, Senior Vice President for Research Innovation and Impact at the University of Arizona, Dr. Betsy Cantwell, formed the Arizona Institutes for Resilient Environment and Societies (AIRES) to promote an integrated vision for environmental research and innovative leadership that capitalizes on the existing Arizona expertise in environment. Drawing on the full complement of Arizona’s academic strengths, useful infrastructure and other resources available across the university, AIRES will elevate the university’s global reputation in environment and sustainability.
Professor Jim Buizer is serving as interim director of AIRES, comprised of what were the Institute of the Environment (IE), the Institute for Energy Solutions (IES) and the Water & Energy Sustainable Technology Center (WEST Center). Buizer is also chairing a design committee charged with producing recommendations to Dr. Cantwell about how environmental research should be structured at the university, a business plan on how it should be sustained, and a permanent name for the institute. The committee will also produce a position description for a permanent director, and will recommend a strategy to attract world-renowned applicants to the position.
