Mining Engineering: Mineral Processing

Degree or Minor:
Undergraduate Degree
Green Concentration:
UA College:
Degree Type:
BS in Mining Engineering
Degree/Minor Description:

Mining engineers plan, develop, and operate mines, as well as other engineering excavations with an emphasis put on engineering excavations to have minimal environmental effects. They engineer the individual systems within a mining operation or large-earth-engineering projects. They learn how to determine the economic worth of a mineral deposit and how rock behaves when excavated. They learn how to excavate, transport, and process minerals. In addition, students use mining software to design, plan, and supervise mines. The mineral processing track provides a path for students to gain an in-depth knowledge of ore comminution and liberation, removal of the valuable minerals in the form of concentrate, extraction of valuable metals from concentrates, and purification of metals using aqueous or thermal chemistry. Students are encouraged to pursue a minor in chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials science and engineering with this track.
