About the Resilience Internships and Student Experiences (RISE) Program
The RISE Program is hosted by the Arizona Institute for Resilience (AIR) and aims to provide both undergraduate and graduate students with paid internships related to resilient environments and societies. RISE internships give students experience in workplace settings with an opportunity to grow their interpersonal skills and prepare them for careers after graduation.
About Arizona Luminaria
Arizona Luminaria is an independent, nonprofit news organization. Our journalists cover public affairs topics including local environmental issues, equity issues, education, voting, and community development.
Internship summary
As a Luminaria intern reporter you’ll write articles that serve Arizonans who are deeply engaged in their communities and passionate about local environmental issues. You’ll produce a mix of community journalism, enterprise reporting, investigative and narrative stories with your coach/editor’s support. You’ll focus on stories about our changing desert environment in Arizona.
You’ll work from home but conduct some interviews in person and go on-site for some stories. We are happy to work around your school schedule. You’ll report directly to Executive Editor Dianna Náñez, member of a Pulitzer Prize-winning team covering borderlands, a DEIAB expert, and experienced storytelling coach/mentor with a background in investigative reporting and narrative writing.

Internship description
Responsibilities include:
- Generate story ideas that focus on our changing desert environment in Arizona.
- Produce on average one article per month, in coordination with your editor/coach, for Arizona Luminaria websites and newsletters.
- Develop and demonstrate the cultural competence required to cover marginalized and underrepresented communities.
- Learn to work collaboratively and communicate with editors and other journalists in a newsroom.
- Build relationships and use social media to develop sources, generate ideas and share stories.
- Some evening hours to cover meetings and some travel within Arizona may be required.
Compensation
The intern will be compensated by the University of Arizona. The pay rate is $18/hour. A student membership to the Society of Environmental Journalists also is provided. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.
