Degree/Minor Description: 

Biosystems engineers use engineering, math, and biology to design systems to manage soil and water resources and to design and develop biological and biomedical products. They work on projects involving wise use of energy, materials, biochemicals, and recyclable wastes. They combine technical knowledge, computer techniques, and control systems for a deeper understanding of agriculture and biology. Students may specialize in water resource engineering or biological engineering. Students who complete the program should be able to work in natural resources and biotechnology-related industries or be able to enroll in an advanced professional degree program.

Research Opportunities: 

Advanced Traffic and Logistics Algorithms and Systems: The ATLAS Lab is a research center that serves to promote research and education in transportation, engineering, and planning. The ATLAS Center mission is to promote and conduct basic research on advanced technologies and methods for transportation and logistics management. 

Arizona Materials Laboratory:  AML creates a collaborative and synergistic environment for faculty, postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students to conduct materials research. Previously, the center was involed in multi-disciplinary research, development, and practical implementation of solar energy solutions to meet our energy needs.

Arizona Research Laboratories: ARL provides campus-wide service facilities for university researchers and faculty. It provides laboratories and core services in different scientific disciplines where students can volunteer or receive credit for their time. Arizona Statistics Consulting LaboratoryThe StatLab is a research facility that designs studies which are statistically efficient and scientifically practical. Research includes data analysis, practical interpretation of the results and development of new statistical methods to address problems in science and medicine.   

Biosphere 2: Biosphere 2 is owned by the University of Arizona and is an Earth systems science research facility that focuses on the Earth, its living systems, and sustainability. The facility is located in northern Tucson and serves as a center for research, outreach, and teaching.

BIO5 InstituteThe BIO5 Institute is at the leading edge of life sciences research, bringing together researchers from agriculture, medicine, pharmacy, basic science, and engineering. The main goal of BIO5 is to find bold solutions to complex, biology-based challenges affecting humanity.

Controlled Environment Agriculture CenterCEASA is a club for students interested in hydroponics and controlled environment agriculture. CEASA promotes hands-on experience with design, maintenance, and hydroponic systems in greenhouses. 

Fabrication Shop and Laboratory: The Fabrication Shop and Laboratory is affiliated with the College of Agriculture and the Department of Agriculture and Biosystems Engineering. The Fabrication Shop and Lab provides students with opportunities for hands-on manufacturing and fabrication in a safe environment.
