Natural disasters have devastating social impacts in the caste-based society of India. Caste based societies offer little to no opportunity for upward social mobility as individuals are born into and must remain in the caste to which they were born. One important and understudied result of this social stratification is that natural disasters impact certain populations of individuals more severely than others. This talk will explore the development of a framework termed ‘Environmental casteism’ which looks at the relationship between caste, gender, and environment.
