Overview of position: Volunteers in this position are stationed at the Museum’s aquatic exhibits. They help guests engage in being touched by the rays and feeding experiences while providing interpretation of the aquatic collection.


Primary Specific Tasks:

1. Completing training courses related to interpreting aquatic species of the Sea of Cortez

2. Helping to manage entry into the exhibit (along with engaging those standing in line)

2. Explaining instructions related to touching and feeding experiences

3. Assuring the safety of both the aquatic animals and guests during touchings/feedings

4. Engaging guests with interpretive facts and stories related to the aquatic collection


Day(s) of week volunteer(s) work in this position: Sunday-Saturday


Hours: Shifts are generally from 8:30am-1:00pm and from 12:30pm-5:00pm. Shifts are from 4:30pm-9:30pm during Cool Summer Nights (which occur from May – August).


Duration (specify period or minimum # of months): A minimum commitment of 7 months is required, during the following sessions: Start of April - End of October & Start of October - End of April. Interviews take place in March and September (trainings overlaps with the previous session).

Number of individuals in this position:

October – April; 5 volunteers per shift

April – October; 3 volunteers per shift (CSN; 7 per shift)

Qualifications: Applicants should have an outgoing personality and an eagerness to share information with museum guests. Applicants must be willing to endure (shaded) outdoor weather conditions throughout the year. Standing for long periods of time is an aspect of the position.

Benefits to the volunteer: This is a wonderful opportunity to volunteer with marine animals at an AZA accredited facility. Volunteers get the chance to expand upon their public speaking skills while gaining knowledge of species related to the Sea of Cortez.
