Company Background: RedCastle Resources is a progressive, employee-friendly company providing on-site geospatial and information technology support to the USDA Forest Service, Geospatial Technology Applications Center (GTAC) in Salt Lake City, Utah. GTAC is a national center of excellence within the Forest Service for geospatial data analysis and provisioning (satellite, aerial imagery, lidar, and other geographic data). GTAC assists national forests, regional and Washington offices, research, International Programs, and other federal agencies by using advanced geospatial technologies for improved mapping, inventorying, and monitoring of natural resources.

Position Description:

The Remote Sensing Applications Specialist will work individually and as part of a team conducting remote sensing projects. The individual will assist in developing and implementing image processing techniques for natural resource applications, including vegetation mapping, ecological monitoring, and vegetation change detection. Primary responsibilities will include mapping vegetation characteristics including composition, canopy cover, and structure for National Forest Lands in the Intermountain, Rocky Mountain, Southwestern, and Alaska Regions of the USDA Forest Service. This will require using multispectral imagery, automated pixel and objectorientated image classification techniques, spatial modeling, statistical analysis, and data mining tools. Over time, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on projects ranging from project-scale to broad-scale natural resource assessments. Occasional field work is also required. The following characteristics are desirable:

  • Personal and professional interest in natural resources and the application of geospatial technologies to resource management problems
  • Experience with mapping software such as ERDAS, ArcGIS, eCognition, R, and Google Earth Engine
  • Experience or coursework in python, java script, ArcPy or other scripting languages
  • Background in forestry, ecology, soils, or natural resource management with knowledge of vegetation, vegetation classification systems, and field data collection methods
  • Excellent communication skills including technical writing and verbal communication.

Successful candidates are expected to be self-motivated, have demonstrated initiative, be able to work independently and also as part of a team, be able to collaborate with resource specialists, and be adaptable to changing client priorities.

Education and Experience:

The successful candidate will have at least 2 years of experience in remote sensing with good current working knowledge of remote sensing and GIS software such as ERDAS Imagine, ESRI products (ArcGIS), Definiens eCognition, Google Earth Engine, R, and others. The minimum degree requirement is a BA/BS (preferably a MA/MS) in a natural resource or technical area such as forestry, soil science, biology, geography/GIS, or ecology, with coursework in geospatial technologies.
