Improving the Sustainability of the Chemical Engineering Unit Operations Laboratory with Cooling Water Recirculation

Four Chemical Engineering majors upgraded the infrastructure of their Harshbarger lab by making the process of cooling steam more efficient, and more sustainable. Their efforts hope to reduce the lab’s water consumption by 200,000 gallons per year. The chilled water system includes a 500 gallon water storage tank. The 500 gallons of water is continually recirculated through the distillation column over the course of the semester preventing the release of nearly 25,000 gallons of house water.
