Natural Resources and the Environment: Ecology, Management, and Restoration of Rangelands
Ecology, Management, and Restoration of Rangelands deals with the biological and physical processes of ecosystems and the application of this knowledge to the sustainable use of range and open lands. This is a great opportunity for students with an interest in plant ecology, plant animal interactions, and management of landscapes. Technical courses in range management and related natural resource subjects stress the application of basic concepts to management planning and practices. Selection of courses in wildlife or fisheries science, watershed hydrology and management, soil and water science, animal and plant science, or agricultural and resource economics can enhance qualification for certain types of employment. Many of these courses involve hands-on work in the rangelands of Arizona. Range management professionals may inventory soils, plants, and animals; develop resource management plans with agencies or private firms; help restore degraded lands; or manage a preserve or ranch. Because of their broad, interdisciplinary background, students are employed by the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Indian Affairs, National Park Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service, state land departments, and a variety of other agencies.
Biosphere 2: Biosphere 2 is owned by the University of Arizona and is an Earth systems science research facility that focuses on the Earth, its living systems, and sustainability. The facility is located in northern Tucson and serves as a center for research, outreach, and teaching.
Yuma Agricultural Center: The YAC has two research facilities, one in Yuma and another in Mesa. These facilities include about 200-300 acres of farmland for a diversified range of crops, including cotton, grains, and vegetables. The YAC focuses on research in plant physiology, crop production, insect biology, food safety and several other topics.
Environmental Research Laboratory: The ERL is a research facility that is part of the Department of Soil, Water and Environmental Science. It is used to improve the health, welfare and living standards of communities in desert areas through the application of appropriate and sustainable technologies.
Water Resources Research Center: The WRRC promotes understanding of critical state and regional water management and policy issues through research, community outreach and engagement, and public education.
Campus Agricultural Center: The CAC is a 160 acre research, teaching, and extension facility, which supports those functions of the eleven College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) departments. It is currently home to over 70 different multidisciplinary research studies in the fields, laboratories, and greenhouses.
