Microbiology is the study of the biology of microorganisms and how they interact with their surroundings. Microbiologists study the interaction of microorganisms in the environment, how microorganisms play a role in the bioremediation of polluted areas, and what critical niches microorganisms play in the environment overall in order to make it function well. Specialization in the field of microbiology encompasses the study of the fundamental processes of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, as well as the study of host defense systems that counter microbial infection. Students who graduate with a microbiology degree have the opportunity to enter into careers of research, agricultural production, or environmental consulting. This degree also prepares them for graduate school in many fields.

Biomedical Research Abroad: Vistas Open!: BRAVO is a program that enables students to participate in research opportunities abroad related to the research students participate in at the University of Arizona. BRAVO promotes the advancement of collaborative projects involving UA biomedical and behavioral scientists.
