Cooper Center Overview: The Cooper Center for Environmental Learning (Camp Cooper) offers memorable overnight and day field trip experiences to Southern Arizona schools, with a focus on positive and enriching experiences in nature, understanding basic ecological concepts, and inspiring children to live more lightly and harmoniously on our planet. Cooper is located in the Tucson Mountains, approximately 20 minutes west of the main UA campus. The Center is a partnership between the UA College of Education and Tucson Unified School District.
Position Description: The Cooper Center is hiring for a position that focuses on connecting University of Arizona students and on-campus sustainability projects with the Center and its educational programs for children. Programs are based on the Cooper Center’s Mission Statement and the philosophy of the Institute for Earth Education in order to “emphasize understanding of basic ecological processes, develop positive feelings for the natural world, and make personal lifestyle changes as stewards of the earth.” The individual chosen for this position will work in collaboration with College of Education graduate students and other Cooper Center staff to carry out Year 2 or this project, funded by the University of Arizona Green Fund. Duties: Lead and assist educational programs in outdoor settings (program training provided) Collaborate with the Project Coordinator to develop a plan of action; communicate with leaders of UA programs, organizations, and student groups to connect Cooper Center programs with sustainability efforts Participate in weekly meetings with Project Coordinators to communicate status of project activities Plan, coordinate, and participate in events at Cooper Center, on main UA campus, and in the community Participate in program-related tasks including planning, setup, delivery, materials design and maintenance Assist with field experience logistics including group arrivals and departures, etc.
Qualifications: Strong communication skills in person, phone, and electronically, a positive attitude, ability to work hard as part of a team and independently, personal drive and initiative, leadership talents, physical conditioning, and love for working outdoors in a desert setting.
Position Specifics: Pay/Time Commitment: $10/hour; up to 16 hrs/week. Position hours are primarily Monday through Friday with some weekend event commitments; daily schedules vary. Position begins within 2-3 weeks of acceptance of the position. Academic Year employees preferred but Semester candidates will be considered. Work occurs on UA campus and at Cooper Center. The Center is 20 minutes west of main UA campus. Providing your own transportation to and from the Center is preferred.
