Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Volunteer

Overview of position:

GIS volunteers help create a Botanical Garden Map, using the Desert Museum’s ArcGIS account and related software (Collection Mapper Template and Collection Mapper App).

Primary Specific Tasks:

· Collecting new field data points in the Cactus Garden, using a digital tablet (provided by the Desert Museum)

· Taking photos of the plants that correspond with the field data points

· Uploading field data and corresponding photos to the Museum’s existing story map

· Inputting provided natural history text to corresponding data points and their images

 

Work schedule:

Volunteers in this position make at least a 3-6 month commitment, volunteer once a week (Monday-Friday). Due to the independent nature of this position, shift times are flexible.

 

Qualifications:

Applicants should have experience with or be fairly knowledgeable of GIS and mapping software; a background in a related field (Botany, Horticulture, and Landscape Architecture) is also preferred but not necessary. Applicants should be able to traverse the Museum’s rugged terrain, have full use of their hands and be able to lift up to 25lbs.
