Our research group focuses on biogeochemical processes occurring in soil, sediment and water. Of particular interest are components and processes that influence the form and mobility of metals and organic compounds in the earth’s near-surface environment. We combine field studies and laboratory experiments with the tools of analytical chemistry to investigate how interactions between biotic and abiotic components of biogeochemical systems (plants, microbes, solutions, gases, mineral particles, natural organic matter, pollutants) affect processes essential to environmental health, such as carbon sequestration, contaminant attenuation, and soil formation.
