Job Summary

The UA Compost Cats are looking for a student employee for a part time position titled Equipment Specialist. The equipment specialist will be a vital part of our rapidly growing, student-run program, continuing our business model, turning what would be landfill waste into high-quality soil amendment products. Job duties will be performed both at San Xavier Co-op Farm and on the UA main campus. This is a part-time position that includes being on call in case of emergency between the hours of 7a.m.-4:30p.m., Sunday-Friday, but job duties should rarely exceed 20 hours per week. Your regular work schedule will be set up to work with your class schedule.

The equipment specialist is responsible for equipment maintenance, staff training in the use of heavy trucks and heavy equipment, and helping to ensure the safe and efficient handling and processing of organic materials as they are converted into compost. The equipment specialist reports directly to the Compost Cats Project Director, Operations Manager, and Farm Crew Manager.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

· Equipment Specialist is responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of assigned equipment used in handling and processing green waste, food waste, compost, and other soil amendments.

· Equipment Specialist will train other staff members on equipment as required to complete daily work schedules. Examples of work tasks include:

  • Produce quality compost. Move mulch into windrows. Aerating, turning, moving, and processing windrows. Screening of finished compost. Blending compost to produce high quality blended products. Loading customers’ vehicles with compost. Pushing or spreading green waste to make room for dumping and cleaning.
  • Operation or supervision of skip loader, tractor, and other heavy equipment to maintain facility and perform rough grading of landscape and water runoff, compost loading, and sifting.
  • Participation in manual labor associated with keeping contaminants out of green waste and mulch piles.
  • Safety and maintenance inspections as described in the preventative and daily equipment checklist.
  • Operation of 1-ton stake-bed truck with manual transmission, sometimes while pulling a trailer, to transport materials or equipment.
  • Operation of large water truck for dust control and management.
  • Proper disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Coordination of training workshops for student trainees to teach them how to operate all applicable equipment for composting operations and proper daily pre- and post-operation inspection and maintenance.
  • Keeping farm operations clean, well-organized, and environmentally responsible for the enjoyment of our customers, staff members, and business associates.
  • Attendance at weekly Compost Cats staff meetings.

Required Skills

· Knowledge of heavy equipment, materials and supplies used in landscaping and parks maintenance; knowledge of tools and supplies used to do minor repairs and regular maintenance of equipment.

· Ability to communicate effectively with customers, co-workers, contractors and the general public, both orally and in written emails and memos.

· Ability to apply common sense and good judgment to everyday fieldwork situations to ensure staff and customer safety and keep equipment and tools in good working order.

· Must possess a valid driver’s license and good driving record.

· Able to drive standard transmission.

· Long-time knowledge of hand tools, especially auto mechanic’s tools.

· Ability to do oil changes; ability to change air and fuel filters when necessary; ability to change engine serpentine belt.

· Must be able to teach and pass down knowledge to co-workers through successful workshops and training sessions.

· Research experience related to equipment procurement is helpful but not required.

Physical Demands

· The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

· Work involves walking, standing, sitting, and stooping. Must have the ability to perform moderately strenuous physical labor.

· The employee may be required to push, pull, or lift 75 pounds or more.

· The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet in the office and moderately loud in the field.
