Beyond Risk: Supporting Private Sector Climate Investment Through Climate Optimization
Business owners, investors, and fund managers are increasingly aware and accepting of the need to account for climate risk in their planning and portfolio management. For example, the Securities and Exchange Commission requires publicly-traded companies to disclose climate risk in their annual reporting, Blackrock released new guidance on adapting portfolios to climate change, and in December 2016, the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures released recommendations for how businesses can more consistently assess and disclose financial risk. However, there is still considerable confusion in the private and investment sectors about how to appropriately identify and then manage climate risk, and even more confusion over how to assess business opportunity in a changing climate - a critical factor in increasing the flow of traditional investment capital. This talk will outline a new approach in closing this information gap, demonstrating a pathway to investing in climate-smart businesses, and growing the climate solutions sector: an approach we call climate optimization.
